Historically known as Edgar Hill, Winter Hill is currently the site of one of the largest telecommunication masts in the North of England and is categorised as a Marilyn due to it's prominence. The mast serves approximately six million people, reaching as far as North Wales. The surrounding areas - including Rivington Pike - are often used for leisure purposes and to celebrate Good Friday during Easter Holidays, according to local traditions.
The location is also associated with a number of plane crashes, natural disasters and features a number of burial mounds. With a history dating back to around 1500 BC, the area has been in use long before it was ever considered for broadcasting back in the 1950s.
The dichotomy presented by the contrasting of both contemporary and ancient uses of this land, reflects themes that run throughout recorded history - of man and the wider society being ignorant of its past. This project is a photographic exploration attempting to connect the dots of historical information hidden by time, to better understand the present and our place within the landscape.
